You can also keep reading to learn more about the signs that can mean your air conditioner is reaching the end of its life and needs to be upgraded.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your AC

First, let’s talk about some of the signs that can indicate it’s time for your air conditioner to get an upgrade. If you face a single major repair that costs thousands of dollars or have experienced multiple repairs in a row, your AC may be reaching the end of its lifespan. Frequent or significant repairs can signal that your air conditioner is old enough that it needs to be replaced.

Typically, air conditioners last for anywhere between 10 and 15 years. Having an air conditioner that falls within this age range also makes it more likely that it is time for a replacement. How much care you have put into your air conditioner is a major determining factor in whether your unit will last for closer to the 10 or 15-year mark.

Air conditioners that receive regular maintenance can last for 15 years and sometimes a bit longer. However, no matter how old your air conditioner is, seeing an uptick in repair needs can signal that it’s time to consider a brand new unit.

You also want to consider how your air conditioner is operating, whether or not you have repair needs. Hearing unusual sounds during operation or seeing significant changes in how your air conditioner is cooling your home can point toward the system, aging and becoming less effective.

Older air conditioners are not up to today’s standards anyway, and when you add in the fact that they have been operating for 10 to 15 years, it’s easy to see the benefits of upgrading to a new unit. Having a new air conditioner means that you’ll enjoy the peace of mind in knowing that your AC has a long lifespan ahead of it, plus improved efficiency since air conditioners today are much more efficient than the units being installed a couple of decades ago.

When to Consider Repairs

If repairs are inexpensive or you can’t afford to invest in a brand new unit right now, it makes sense to go ahead and make the repairs. Minor repairs can help extend the lifespan of your air conditioner, even if it’s just for another season. This gives you time to plan ahead and get ready for the investment of a new AC unit in the near future.
