Use Your Air Conditioner Wisely

Your air conditioner is one of the most important appliances in your household, especially with summer on the way here in Beaverton, OR. And just like any appliance, you need to use it wisely in order to keep it efficient and functional. You wouldn’t put laundry detergent in your dishwasher, for example, or leave your TV on all day when there’s no one home. So it is with your air conditioner. The more wisely you can use it, the more money you’ll save, and the less chance of a breakdown or similar problem afflicting it. Here’s a few easy tips to help you use your air conditioner wisely.

  • Don’t Run It with an Empty House. Some people mistakenly believe that turning an air conditioner on in the cool of the morning and leaving it running all day is better than turning it on when you get home and it’s hot. This simply isn’t true. Set your thermostat to turn the AC on 20 minutes before you get home instead of running it all day.
  • Don’t Set the Temperature Lower than You Want. Many people think that setting a cooler temperature will cool the house faster. It won’t. Air conditioners are either on or off, and the thermostat setting merely determines how long they run. Set the temperature you want and let the system do its job.
  • Open Up the House at Night. In some cases, you may need to run the air conditioner at night to stave off a heat wave. But in many cases, opening the windows and turning on the fan at night will keep you house cool and cut down on those energy bills.
  • Set the Temperature a Few Degrees Higher. Setting the temperature to 78 instead of 75 will still keep your house cool and could put a lot of money back into your pocket.
