Ways You Can Help Minimize Repair Needs For Your AC

In Portland, the hot and humid summer weather has us all turning our air conditioners on pretty frequently, and this will lead to a much higher demand for AC repairs. The more we use our air conditioners, the more prone they are to the toll of regular wear and tear.

However, there is a way to avoid frequent repair needs. All you have to do is schedule maintenance with a pro from The Clean Air Act. It’s that simple.

While an expert’s opinion and professional help are almost always necessary, there are certain things you can do on your own to help avoid repairs. Here, we will discuss some of the easiest things you can do to dodge AC repairs in the future.

Taking Care of the Basics

You can avoid more significant problems by taking care of some of the smaller AC maintenance tasks. Here are some things you can do on your own, without professional help:

Change or clean the filters in your air conditioner

Air conditioners have filters installed in them to capture dirt and debris from the air before it gets inside the system.

Depending on the type of filter your system has, you will want to either replace it or clean it regularly. If you have a disposable filter, make sure to change it every one to three months. On the other hand, if you have a reusable filter make, sure to follow the instructions for cleaning it on a regular basis. (In general, we recommend using replaceable filters.)

This is one of the easiest ways to help your air conditioner operate more efficiently. By cleaning the filter or replacing it, you can lower AC energy consumption by 5% to 15%.

The Evaporator Coil

While filters need to be cleaned every month or two, the evaporator coil will only need to be wiped down every once in a while.

It is important to keep this component of your air conditioner clean since, over time, it will collect dirt and have trouble absorbing heat.

In addition to changing out your filter, you should also clean any dirt surrounding the AC to avoid the coil from getting too dirty.

Other Basics

The filter and the evaporator coil are some of the main things that affect your AC’s function. However, there are more things you can take care of to avoid any mishap. These are:

  1. Keeping the area around the house clean and clear of debris.
  2.  Keeping the thermostat settings reasonable to reduce stress on the system.
  3. Covering the outside unit during winter to protect it.
